CULINARY HONOR. A PORTUGUESE RESTAURANT, GIVING SAN JOSE ITS FIRST MICHELIN STAR. WE SENT KPIX-5 REPORTER “KIET DO” TO GO GET A TASTE. I HAD TO INVESTIGATE FOR MYSELF WHAT ALL THE FUSS WAS ABOUT. AND SO, CHEF DAVID COSTA MADE ME HIS RENOWNED POLVO A LAGAREIRO, OVEN ROASTED OCTOPUS WITH POTATOES SAUTEED IN GARLIC AND OLIVE OIL. MORE ON THAT, LATER. (NATS dancing) THE ADEGA STAFF FINALLY HAD A CHANCE TO CELEBRATE, AFTER GETTING THE CALL FROM MICHELIN YESTERDAY THAT THEY WERE THE FIRST RESTAURANT IN SAN JOSE, AND THE SECOND PORTUGUESE RESTAURANT IN THE COUNTRY TO RECEIVE A MICHELIN STAR. (Carlos & Fernanda Carreira, Owners: We were just like, excited.excited, overwhelmed, numb, shocked). (NATS) MICHELIN SAYS ADEGA HASN’T LOST SIGHT OF THEIR ROOTS. INFUSING HOMEY CUISINE WITH GREAT TECHNIQUES AND INGREDIENTS, AND MORE THAN 300 WINES, ALL PORTUGUESE. THE CARREIRAS SAY THEY TOOK A BIG RISK BY STAYING AUTHENTIC, AND NOT PULLING ANY PUNCHES. (Carlos Carreira, Owner: We didn’t have to adapt to the California palette. This is what Portuguese food is, this is what we present.) DAUGHTER JESSICA CARREIRA IS THE PASTRY CHEF, BORN AND RAISED IN SAN JOSE’S LITTLE PORTUGAL. SHE AND HEAD CHEF DAVID COSTA MET IN PORTUGAL AND ARE NOW ENGAGED. JESSICA IS PROUD TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THIS LITTLE- KNOWN CORNER OF THE SOUTH BAY. (Jessica Carreira, Pastry Chef: To compete with San Francisco and the other cities around the Bay Area, we’re on it. We’re ready.) NOW ABOUT THAT ROASTED OCTOPUS. IT’S NOT A STRETCH TO SAY YOU PROBABLY HAVE NEVER HAD OCTOPUS THIS TENDER AND AMAZING. (NATS eating) (NATS wine glasses) SO TO ADEGA, CONGRATULATIONS. WAY TO REPRESENT SAN JOSE AND THE PORTUGUESE CULTURE.. (NATS phone) (Kiet standup: As you can imagine, their phone has been ringing off the hook. If you’re trying to get a reservation, keep in mind that they’re pretty much booked up Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in November. There are a few select spots in December. In East San Jose, Kiet Do, KPIX 5.) LOOKING LIVE OUTSIDE TOWARD THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE A FEW CLOUDS IN THE SKY NOW, BUT THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE A FEW CLOUDS IN THE SKY NOW, BUT
