SHE ISN’T THE ONLY ONE. THE WOMAN WHO FOUGHT BACK TO PROTECT HERSELF AND HER DAUGHTER. ALSO FORCED OUT OF THEIR HOMES WITHOUT NATURAL GAS SERVICE AND TEMPERATURES DIPPING DOWN INTO THE 30s TONIGHT. THE RUSH TO GET PEOPLES HEAT AND HOT WATER BACK ON THIS EVENING. THAT’S WHERE WE BEGIN TONIGHT. I’M GILMA AVALOS. AND JEFF I KNOW YOU’VE BEEN WATCHING TONIGHT, ARE GAS CREWS MAKING ANY PROGRESS? Reporter: YEAH THEY ARE AND IT’S BEEN A LONG NIGHT NOT ONLY FOR FAMILIES WHO LIVE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD BUT FOR CREWS WORKING OUT HERE. THE ATMOS TECHNICIANS TOLD ME THEY JUST FIXED THE GAS LINE. FOLKS HAVE SPENT HOURS WITHOUT SERVICE AND IN THE COLD. THEY WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF SEWER REPAIRS WHEN A WRONG MOVE CREATED QUITE THE SCARE. IT SOUNDED LIKE A RELEASE OF PRESSURE. AS THE PRESSURE WAS COMING OUT YOU COULD HEAR IT OUTSIDE THE BACK OF THE HOUSE. WHEN HE HEARD IT WAS A GAS LEAK HE DIDN’T THINK TWICE. TIME TO GO. TIME TO GO. YOU DON’T WANT TO TAKE ANY CHANCES. IT WAS ONE OF NEARLY 40 FAMILIES FORCED TO EVACUATE. A WORK CREW CUT INTO A NATURAL GAS LINE SENDING GAS INTO SEWERS AND SEEPED DANGEROUSLY INTO HOMES. IT DOESN’T TAKE A LOT OF GAS TO GET IN THERE AND CAUSE AN EXPLOSION OR FIRE. IT’S WHY MORE THAN 100 FAMILIES SPENT MUCH OF THE EVENING WITHOUT NATURAL GAS SERVICE. IT GOT COULD. STARTED GETTING COLD THEN SAW THE FIRE TRUCKS AND EVERYTHING HERE. THEY HOOKED UP THIS ELECTRICAL HEATER AND STOCKED UP ON THE BLANKETS. I’M NATE ED FRUSTRATED BECAUSE I CAN’T — I’M FRUSTRATED BECAUSE I CAN’T COOK AND HE HAS TO EAT. SNUGGLE. WE’RE FROM UP NORTH SO WE KNOW HOW TO SNUGGLE. NOW THE CREW WHO CAUSED THIS GAS LEAK IS UNRELATED TO ATMOS BUT STILL THE COMPANY OFFER TODAY PUT UP ANYBODY IMPACTED BY THIS GAS LEAK IN A HOTEL FOR THE NIGHT. JEFF, THANKS MUCH. WE KNOW NATURAL GAS LEAKS CAN HAPPEN PRETTY MUCH ANY TIME ANYWHERE THERE IS A PIPE LINE. THEY SAY IF YOU EVER SMELL THAT DISTINCTIVE ROT TEN EGG GAS SMELL LEAVE IMMEDIATELY, NOTHING ELSE. ONLY ONCE YOU’RE AWAY FROM THE SMELL THEN GRAB A PHONE, CALL 911 OR CALL THE ATMOS LEAK NUMBER.
