ESTATE MARKET IS BOOMING… IT
COMES AT A PRICE. AND THE
PEOPLE WHO MUST PAY THE PRICE
CANT AFFORD IT. TONIGHT… ONE
DISABLED 75-YEAR OLD TUCSON
RESIDENT IS CONCERNED SHE MAY SOON BE LIVING ON THE STREETS. NEWS 4 TUCSON’S LUPITA MURILLO
DIGS DEEPER INTO THE SHORTAGE
IN LOW INCOME HOUSING. LILY ROSE KRUGLY CONTACTED NEWS
4 TUCSON… TELLING US SHE WAS
OUT OF OPTIONS AND AT THE END
OF HER ROPE. THE APARTMENT
COMPLEX SHE’S CALLED HOME FOR
MORE THAN A DECADE WAS RECENTLY SOLD. SHE NEEDS TO BE
OUT AT THE END OF THIS MONTH. THE PROBLEM? SHE HAS NO PLACE
TO GO. I’m not looking for a
handout I’m just looking for a
place to live. 75 YEAR OLD
LILLY ROSE KRUGLY’S DAYS ARE
NUMBERED AT THIS COMPLEX WHERE SHE’S LIVED FOR 15 YEARS. MAKING MATTERS WORSE HER
HEALTH ISN’T THE BEST… THE
END OF MARCH I HAD PNEUMONIA
CAME HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL ON
OXYGEN. SHE IS ALSO A SEVERE
BRAIN INJURY SURVIVOR FROM A NEAR FATAL CAR CRASH 20 YEARS
AGO. That’s how I got on
Section 8. SECTION EIGHT IS A
FEDERAL PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES
HELP WITH RENT FOR LOW INCOME
FAMILIES THROUGH A VOUCHER. I don’t know how I would live; I
don’t know how I would pay
rent. They pay approximately
two- thirds of your rent. FOR
THE PAST FEW WEEKS LILLY HAS
BEEN DESPERATELY SEARCHING FOR A NEW PLACE TO LIVE. ONE THAT
DOES ACCEPT SECTION EIGHT
HOUSING VOUCHERS. HER SEARCH
HAS BEEN IN VAIN. No to
Section 8. No section 8. No
section 8 NEWS 4 TUCSON WANTED TO DO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM
IS, AND WHAT’S BEING DONE TO
FIX IT. SO WE WENT STRAIGHT TO
THE CITY DEPARTMENT THAT’S
RESPONSIBLE FOR HANDING OUT
THE SECTION 8 FUNDS. What I can tell you is that the
resources we have through
Section 8 public housing
program is definitely not
enough to be able to supply
the need in order for people to have affordable housing. EXPERTS SAY ONE REASON FOR THE
HOUSING SHORTAGE IS AN INFLUX
OF OUT OF STATE INVESTORS
SNATCHING UP RENTAL UNITS IN
TUCSON THEN HIKING UP THE
RENT. Unfortunately we have a fairly high poverty rate in
this community, and so the
number of people who can
actually afford to pay those
rents is not there. THE PIMA
COUNCIL ON AGING HAS ALSO SEEN A HUGE INCREASE IN REQUESTS
FOR ASSISTANCE FROM RENTERS
LIKE LILLY ROSE. BUT THERE’S
ONLY SO MUCH THE NON- PROFIT
CAN DO. I would imagine
unfortunately some people may end up on the street we’ve
been working very hard to
prevent that from happening
for the people who come here. OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS
THE CITY*HA* WORKED WITH
DEVELOPERS TO BUILD MORE
AFFORDABLE HOUSING… BUT THE
DEMAND IS STILL GREATER THAN
THE SUPPLY. We just to keep pushing forward to make sure
we are doing everything we can
to make housing affordable for
people at the lower end more
accessible to them. AFTER NEWS
4 TUCSON BOUGHT LILLY ROSES SITUATION TO THE CITY’S
ATTENTION… MORALES ASSURED
US THEY WOULD HELP. I think
that’s wonderful. I hope they
do that for other people. I’m
not the only one in this situation. NEWS FOR TUCSON HAS
ALSO LEARNED ANOTHER POSSIBLE
REASON FOR THE SECTION 8
SHORTAGE, IS THAT THE FEDERAL
GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN SLOW TO
REIMBURSE LANDLORDS… THAT’S WHY MANY OF THEM ARE NOW
OPTING OUT OF THE PROGRAM. IF
