STUDENTS AT
OBERLIN COLLEGE ARE UPSET AT THE FACT THAT THEIR
UNIVERSITY IS SELLING ETHNIC FOODS THAT ARE NOT
PORTRAYED IN AN ACCURATE WAY. LET’S KEEP AN OPEN MIND BECAUSE
WHEN I FIRST READ IT I WAS ANNOYED BUT I AM TRYING TO
UNDERSTAND IT FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVE. COMPLAINTS AGAINST BON APP…TIT,
INCLUDE SERVING UNDERCOOKED SUSHI RICE, AND COOKED SUSHI
FISH INSTEAD OF RAW, OFFERING GENERAL TSO’S CHICKEN
THAT WAS STEAMED NOT FRIED, SELLING VIETNAMESE DISHES WITH PULLED
PORK INSTEAD OF GRILLED. ” WHEN YOU’RE COOKING A
COUNTRY’S DISH FOR OTHER PEOPLE, INCLUDING PEOPLE THAT
HAVE NEVER TRIED THE ORIGINAL BEFORE- FROM THAT HERITAGE TAKE FOOD,
MODIFY IT, AND SERVE IT AS AUTHENTIC, IT IS APPROPRIATIVE.”>>I CAN’T WIN WITH THIS. FIRST
OF ALL, THERE IS NO GENERAL TSO. MY WIFE IS CHINESE SO SHE
GETS SUPER ANNOYED AT INAUTHENTIC FOOD. THERE ARE GREAT ASIAN
RESTAURANTS IN LA, BUT THERE ARE ALSO REGULAR CHINESE RESTAURANTS THAT
SHE WILL NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR. SHE IS ALLOWED TO BE ANNOYED BY
THAT, THAT MAKES SENSE. IT’S A DIFFERENT THING TO SAY I
AM OFFENDED BECAUSE YOU HAVE MISAPPROPRIATED MY CULTURE. YEAH DUDE, THEY’LL MAKE THE
GYROS AS GOOD HERE AS THEY DO IN TURKEY. SO WHAT THAT THEY ARE A LITTLE
DIFFERENT. BON APP…TIT.>>I LARGELY AGREE WITH YOU. I UNDERSTAND WITH THEM BEING
FRUSTRATED AT THEIR FOOD BEING MISREPRESENTED. THAT IS SUPER ANNOYING AND IT
HAPPENS WITH EVERY CULTURE. EVERY SINGLE CULTURE
EXPERIENCES THIS. IT IS KIND OF FRUSTRATING
BUT IT IS WHAT THE U.S. HAS BEEN DOING SINCE THE
BEGINNING OF THE U.S. WE TAKE OTHER CULTURES AND
MAKE YOUR OWN WHICH CAN BE FRUSTRATING IF WE TRY TO
PASS IT OFF AS AUTHENTIC. BUT I THINK MOST PEOPLE KNOW
IT IS NOT AUTHENTIC. WHEN WE ARE EATING DOMINO’S
WE’RE NOT THINKING IT IS ITALIAN. NO ONE THINKS IT’S REAL
PIZZA, IT IS DOMINO’S.>>THAT IS MY FAVORITE EXAMPLE. ITALIANS ARE THE ONES THAT
BROUGHT PIZZA HERE AND STARTED SELLING IT. THE ITALIANS DID NOT PUT CHEESE
ON THE PIZZA, IT WAS JUST BREAD AND TOMATO SAUCE WHICH IS
WEAK SAUCE. THAT PIZZA SUCKS. WE MADE IT BETTER. WITH CHINESE FOOD, WE DIDN’T
MAKE IT BETTER, BUT IT STILL TASTES GOOD. ON THE ONE HAND I GET THAT IT IS
FRUSTRATING WHEN THERE IS REAL CULTURAL APPROPRIATION. BUT YOU ARE DEGRADING THAT
PHENOMENON AND ALLOWING PEOPLE TO MAKE FUN OF IT WHEN YOU BRING
IT TO THIS ABSURD LEVEL.>>I FEEL LIKE CULTURAL
APPROPRIATION HAS NOW BECOME A PHRASE AS A CATCHALL
FOR ANYTHING THAT MIGHT ANNOY OR OFFEND SOMEONE. CULTURAL APPROPRIATION IS A
THING. IT EXISTS. WHEN WE CELEBRATE WHITE WOMEN
WEARING THEIR HAIR IN AN AFRO WE SAY IT IS EDGY AND COOL,
BUT AT THE SAME TIME COMPANIES REFUSE TO HIRE BLACK WOMEN IF
THEY WEAR THEIR HAIR LIKE THAT. THAT IS CULTURAL APPROPRIATION. THERE IS A DOUBLE STANDARD AND
IT IS AN ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE TALKED ABOUT IN A
CALM DIALOGUE. WHEN YOU SAY SOMETHING ABOUT
RICE NOT BEING COOKED, THEN YOU ARE TAKING A SERIOUS ISSUE
AND BELITTLING IT AND HALTING THE DISCUSSION. PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY PRONE TO
BRUSHING ASIDE ARE GOING TO LOOK AT STORIES LIKE THIS AND SAY
YEAH, THESE PEOPLE ARE CLOWNS.>>OBERLIN IS A NOTORIOUSLY
LIBERAL CAMPUS. I KNOW THAT IS SLANTED.>>BY THE WAY, EVERY SUSHI
RESTAURANT IN AMERICA DOES CULTURAL APPROPRIATION,
INCLUDING THE JAPANESE RESTAURANTS BECAUSE ALL OF
THEM HAVE ALL THESE CRAZY CONCOCTIONS THAT ARE NOT
AUTHENTIC JAPANESE.>>AND THEY ARE NOT ALL RAW. BUT WHEN YOU COMPLAIN THAT IT IS
UNDERCOOKED RICE, YOU HAVE GONE TOO FAR.
